Flu Season Vaccine Updates - 2024-2025

For the 2024-2025 flu season in the United States, all vaccines are expected to be trivalent.

These trivalent vaccines are designed to protect against three specific influenza strains,

  • A(H1N1) virus,
  • A(H3N2) virus,
  • B/Yamagata lineage virus,
  • B/Victoria virus.
Each of these four vaccine virus components are selected based on the following,
  • Which flu viruses are making people sick prior to the upcoming flu season,
  • The extent to which those viruses are spreading prior to the upcoming flu season,
  • How well the previous season’s vaccines may protect against those flu viruses, and
  • The ability of vaccine viruses to provide cross-protection against a range of related flu viruses of the same type or subtype/lineage.
All flu Vaccine for 2024 - 2025 will be trivalent (3 Components)

Difference Between Trivalent vs Quadrivalent

Information About trivalent influenza (flu) vaccine

Trivalent flu vaccines protect against three different influenza viruses.
Trivalent flu vaccines in the United States will include vaccine viruses or viral proteins from,
  • One influenza A(H1N1) virus,
  • One influenza A(H3N2) virus, and
  • One influenza B/Victoria lineage virus.
*** Trivalent will not include an influenza B/Yamagata lineage vaccine virus or viral protein component.

Difference between Quadrivalent and Trivalent Flu vaccines

  • Quadrivalent flu vaccines include vaccine viruses or viral proteins from four viruses,
